What is Patient Safety in EMS?

Date: December 2, 2024 @ 2pm EST/11am PST & 6pm CST/4pm PST

The first webinar, “What is Patient Safety in EMS?” is an essential introduction to patient safety for EMS professionals. This webinar will dive into what patient safety means within the unique environment of EMS and provide a broad overview of how this field has evolved to address risks and challenges specific to emergency settings. Patient safety in EMS covers a wide range of concerns, from reducing adverse events and mitigating risks to fostering a culture of open communication and transparency.

Attendees will gain insight into how a commitment to safety leads to better patient outcomes, a more supportive work environment, and increased trust from the communities served. For those new to patient safety principles, this session will set a solid foundation for understanding the importance of patient safety initiatives and how they can be practically applied within EMS operations.

The Patient Safety Organization and EMS

Date: December 16, 2024 @ 2pm EST/11am PST & 6pm CST/4pm PST

In “The Patient Safety Organization and EMS”, we’ll explore the history, purpose, and benefits of Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs) in healthcare, with a focus on EMS. PSOs were established as part of a federal initiative to improve patient safety by encouraging reporting and learning from adverse events. This session will provide a detailed overview of the legal protections that PSOs offer to EMS organizations, fostering a safe environment for open communication and data sharing on safety incidents.

By joining a PSO, EMS organizations can protect the confidentiality of safety data and foster a non-punitive environment where incidents can be reported without fear of reprisal. This session will be particularly valuable for those in leadership or administrative roles, as it covers the benefits of PSO membership, the role of federal protections, and the ways in which PSOs contribute to a safety-centered organizational culture.

The Importance of Measuring Your Safety Culture in EMS

Date: January 15, 2025 @ 2pm EST/11am PST & 7pm EST/4pm PST

In the third webinar, we’ll take a closer look at “The Importance of Measuring Your Safety Culture in EMS”. Safety culture refers to the attitudes, beliefs, and values that EMS providers and leaders share about patient safety. Research has shown that organizations with a positive safety culture experience fewer adverse events and deliver higher-quality care.

This webinar will discuss the critical role that standardized measurement tools play in assessing and understanding your organization’s safety culture. Through surveys and data analysis, organizations can identify strengths and weaknesses, uncover hidden risks, and track changes over time. By measuring safety culture, EMS providers can make informed decisions that foster a stronger, safer working environment, improve patient outcomes, and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Implementing a Culture Change with Just Culture, PSO, and Survey

Date: January 29, 2025 @ 2pm EST/11am PST & 7pm EST/4pm PST

The final webinar, “Implementing a Culture Change with Just Culture, PSO, and Survey,” is where we put it all together. This session will focus on how to drive cultural transformation within EMS organizations through a comprehensive approach that combines the principles of Just Culture, PSO protections, and the insights gained from safety culture surveys.

A Just Culture balances accountability with the need for an open, fair, and learning-oriented environment. In this webinar, we’ll explore the Just Culture framework and how it can be applied in EMS settings to encourage reporting of mistakes without fear of punishment. By integrating Just Culture principles with PSO membership and regular safety culture surveys, EMS organizations can create a cohesive approach to safety.

This webinar will include actionable steps for implementing a Just Culture and provide guidance on using survey data to identify and address culture gaps. Leaders and practitioners alike will benefit from expert insights on overcoming challenges to achieve a culture change that lasts.

This is an invaluable opportunity for EMS professionals at all levels. Whether you’re a frontline provider, an administrator, or in a leadership role, you’ll gain the tools and knowledge needed to advance patient safety in your organization.
